Insele Solar Relief

Insele Solar Relief

Insele Solar Relief is an initiative by Cynthia van der Hoeven. Cynthia, who is a Dutch national, has been a solar energy and sustainability professional for 25 years. From 2015 till 2022 she worked with Insele Solar to provide the so called solar kits* to the underserved communities in the townships Diepsloot and Lake View in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Convinced of the high quality of Insele Solar Home Systems (Insele SHS), their intelligent battery management system, smart LED lights and sturdy casing, with Insele Solar Relief she is now focusing on helping people and communities affected by conflict or natural disasters.

*The word solar kit refers to the size of the solar energy system. It is not a solar system with multiple, large solar panels, battery packs and inverters used for regular homes. It is a portable, affordable system for low-income customers and off-grid use, consisting of an intelligent battery management system and battery in one casing with USB-ports for phone charging, 12V sockets for other devices and smart LED lights for indoor and outdoor use.

Insele Solar - Rural Communities

Basic Needs

Besides shelter, food and clean drinking water, lighting and connectivity too are basic needs. In situations where there is no power infrastructure or where this is destroyed, solar powered lighting turns even the humblest of shelters into a home. As it replaces the need for burning candles and wood it is a safe and healthy form of indoor lighting whereas the outdoor lights provide safety for the whole community.

As for connectivity, being able to charge phones and stay connected to the internet, this is a basic need too. People caught up in conflict and disaster need to stay in touch with family and friends, stay informed about the situation and should be able to send or receive money.

Insele Solar Home Systems can provide all of that and moreover, made for South Africa’s poor communities, they are designed for harsh living conditions, designed to last as to make a significant and sustainable impact on their lives. Hence the name Insele. Insele means honey badger in zulu and is known for being tough.

Humanitarian Aid

Insele Solar Relief focuses on humanitarian aid organizations to distribute Insele’s sustainable, solar powered solutions to the people and communities affected by conflict and disaster. Thus bringing relief and a spark of hope.

Sustainable, lasting impact

Unlike so called pico solar lights and chargers made in China which are low-quality, break easily and therefore only create more waste and waste funds, Insele Solar Home Systems are high-quality, technologically advanced solar energy solutions made to last as long as 20 twenty years with only the need to change the battery every couple of years.

Where Insele Solar already has a wide range of SHS available, with this Solar Relief program we are able to adjust the products to specific circumstances. If asked, we could also look into the provision solar cookers, power banks and other devices. In any case, the Insele SHS can easily be carried whenever volatile circumstances require people and families to move frequently. When a more stable situation has been achieved, the Insele SHS will maintain a valuable asset, providing clean, safe power from the sun.
